August Pest of the Month: Silverfish

Silverish has the scientific name of Lepisma saccharina, which means that they love carbohydrates like sugar and starch. You may think that keeping foods such as sugar, rice, and flour away from plain sight is enough to rid your home of these pests. Silverfish, however, feed off much more than what is in your kitchen.

Ideal environment
Silverfish love moist areas, which provide hydration throughout the night. It is not uncommon for these nocturnal insects to appear in the bathroom near the shower or toilet when you enter after a restful night’s sleep. Silverfish also find their way into the kitchen near the sink. Imagine your dish rack being home to these pests. Such may be the case if your home has an infestation of silverfish.

You are especially prone to see more of these insects in homes that are old and riddled with foundation cracks and tor screens. Silverfish also enter the home by way of cardboard boxes. It is not uncommon to bring home one of these insects from a warehouse.

Risks to human health
It is true that silverfish are harmless with regard to human health. These insects do not bite and do not carry diseases that could lead to health problems. Silverfish, however, are pests that become more difficult to get rid of the longer that you wait to take action.

Identification
It is not hard to have a home filled with these insects, which get their common name from their gray color and bodies that take on the appearance of fish you would find in the sea. The outward presence of one silverfish is often a sign of hundreds of these pests living in the walls of your home.

Get in touch with a professional
The issue is not discovering that your home has silverfish. Problems arise when you choose to do nothing about the situation. The best solution to your silverfish pests is a professional exterminator who can identify entry spots and treat areas already populated by the insects.
