Pest of the Month: Southern Flannel Moth (Puss Caterpillar)

There are a number of different names for Southern Flannel Moths, but no matter what you call them, this is a pest that is best avoided! Also known as puss caterpillars, asps, opossum bugs, and wooly slugs, this insect is incredibly poisonous and can be quite dangerous.

Poison Spiked Spines and a Complete Transformation

What is fascinating about the Southern flannel moth is that it's prickly spines disappear once they become moths and they are no longer harmful! It is an evolutionary tool that allows the caterpillar to survive its pre-moth stage. Because of this, there is no need to eradicate this insect, but it should be avoided at all costs. If you encounter a fuzzy Southern flannel caterpillar and are stuck with its poisonous spine needles, remove the stingers as quickly as possible and seek immediate medical attention!

Left untreated, this dangerous poison can cause the body to go into shock and begin to shut down. They tend to live near trees and plants where they can blend in, and travel in groups. If you know of an area where the Southern flannel caterpillar has taken up residence, be sure to avoid it and inform any children in your family to do the same.
