Mosquitos thrive in our warm, humid climate. As long as the warm weather stays around, the mosquitoes will, too. This year, local parishes have reported higher than usual occurrences of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus. West Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Tangipahoa Parishes have each continued to report positive test results in their respective parishes. What does this mean for you, and what can you do to make sure you're keeping yourself and your family safe?
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus, meaning it is spread to humans through mosquito bites. Usually, people infected with West Nile don't develop serious symptoms. In fact, The CDC reports that only 1 out of 150 infected people will develop serious or fatal illnesses. However, 1 out of 5 infected individuals will develop some symptoms, such as a fever, joint pain, weakness, and other flu-like symptoms. People experiencing these less severe symptoms usually experience a full recovery, though the sluggish fatigue can stick around for months.
Because there's no cure or vaccine for West Nile Virus, it's best to prevent becoming infected in the first place.
