Silverfish are small, oval-shaped silver or grey insects that are very common in the warm, humid climate we have in Baton Rouge. They do not fly, but they crawl very quickly when confronted or threatened. As silverfish move, their fast movements mimic a fish swimming, hence their name. They reproduce quickly, which is why silverfish infestations tend to happen quickly.

One reason homeowners may not realize how quickly their silverfish infestation is worsening is that they are nocturnal and prefer dark, damp spaces. Silverfish are often found in places such as pipes, sinks, showers, tubs, and dark crevices near damp areas (such as in soffits and fascia). Because silverfish reproduce quickly and they may go unnoticed for some time, they can also cause damage to your belongings. They feed on starches and sugars found in materials such as paper, glue, wet clothes, books, and even fabrics, etc. Silverfish can destroy books, wallpaper, clothes, upholstered furniture, curtains, and more.

Silverfish are not known to bite humans and they do not transmit diseases. So, silverfish are not a direct threat to humans or pets. However, the biggest reason to professionally treat a silverfish infestation is to avoid having your belongings and household items destroyed.
